National Gallery Field Trip for Grade 1

Grade One gathers under Maman

On Thursday 29th May 2025, Grade one experienced their first trip to Canada's National Gallery, the striking glass building modelled on an iceberg that stands tall above Parliament. A wonderful trip to explore famous works of art and to share what inspires their creativity from optical illusions, to woven textiles and gigantic marble rocks. The field trip sponsored by the gallery made students question 'what is art?' There was lots of opportunity to transfer learning skills about expectations for behaviour as they represented York Street P.S. in a new space. Many of the rules from York Street helped them as they navigated the new rules of a gallery, showing respect for the works of art, the members of the public and the artists themselves. Students rejoiced in taking a calm moment to hear the eclectic choral music in the gallery's convent chapel.  We are truly so lucky to have such rich arts opportunities on our doorstep in Lowertown. Did you know that the Gallery opens its doors for free on Thursdays? We hope many of the students will go back with their families to explore some of the famous artists such as the gigantic spider sculpture Maman, indigenous colourful paintings such as Norval Morrisseau or abstract artists such as Riopelle. It was an extremely wet and rainy walk along Sussex, but many members of the public enjoyed seeing our bright York Street pinnies lining the streets of Ottawa. Field trips are always a great way for us to engage with our local community and let people know about our own castle in the heart of Lowertown. A wonderful opportunity for Grade One to engage in the Arts, Social Studies and Language writing. Do come into the hallways of York to see the students' artwork and write ups from their field trip before the end of term. Thank you to the National Gallery for their generosity. We hope to continue to collaborate with you in future school years!
