Principal's Message

Welcome to York Street Public School!

We are a community school in Lowertown Ottawa that serves 255 students and their families from Kindergarten to Grade 8.  At York Street, we strive for students to feel they belong in a safe and inclusive environment.  Educators have high expectations for students where they can learn, grow, explore and discover. Students are encouraged to problem solve by asking questions, testing theories and producing models. We believe that every student is capable and responsible for their progress in learning and look forward to supporting them along this journey.
We have a breakfast and snack program that runs daily and supports all students at the school.  Please join Miss Alana at 7:20 am for breakfast (East side entrance).  Our school runs different extracurricular activities throughout the week and I encourage all students to participate.
Construction is happening at York Street.  We are in the process of revamping the lower level of the school. This will be a multi year project to make the school more accessible to the students as well as the community.  We are installing a commercial kitchen, elevator and accessible washrooms.
You also may have noticed the school ground is starting to look a little different.  The school board installed a new playground in the kindergarten area and we were fortunate that it was ready for the first day of school.
The students are also looking forward to the greening of the school yard.  Please click here to see an article from a local newspaper highlighting some of the things to come at York Street.
I invite and encourage parents/guardians to come to school and be part of our learning community. Please visit our school website and look for our school messages that come out during the school year. Our monthly School Council meeting is held on the second Tuesday of every month from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm in the school library.  School council is a place to engage in conversation about learning at school and to meet the parents/guardians of children at school. We are always happy to have new faces join us around the table.
I look forward to a terrific year and to working with you as a partner in your child’s education.  Please do not hesitate to contact me 613 239-2214 at [email protected]. You can also meet me at the corner of Beausoliel and York Street from 7:45 - 8:00 am from Monday to Friday if you have any questions or concerns.
